Myths and Facts About Erectile Dysfunction

If you’re like most people, talking about sexual problems is a little out of your comfort zone. And if you have erectile dysfunction (ED), you’re not alone in that either — more than half of the male population knows exactly what you’re feeling.

However, here at Urology Associates of Mobile, you have a safe, discreet place to talk about erectile dysfunction openly and get the honest answers you need to resolve your health issues and improve your love life.

Our team of highly trained urologists and nurse practitioners understands the emotions and frustration that goes along with erectile dysfunction. Our goal is to answer your questions with dignity and respect, identify the circumstances causing your ED, and treat your condition with the most effective methods that will restore your sexual satisfaction and your health.

We can also help dispel any misinformation. Here are four common myths that many people believe about ED, along with the facts you need to know.

Myth: I should expect ED as I age.

Fact: Although age and ED are often correlated, ED is not inevitable just because you’re getting older. Studies do show that ED becomes increasingly more common in older men — 40% of men in their 40s and 50% of men in their 50s have some degree of ED — but age, in and of itself, is not the cause.

Getting older also means you’re at a higher risk for certain diseases and musculoskeletal problems, but it doesn’t mean you’re doomed to get them. Your body is a machine, and just like your car, the better you care for it, the longer it will function properly. And just like your car, sometimes your body just needs a little maintenance.

Myth: I have ED because I’m no longer attracted to my partner.

Fact: The list of things that can cause partial or complete ED is long, but “not being attracted to your partner” doesn’t even make the top 20. While attraction and stimulation are certainly important aspects of a physical relationship, the more likely causes are psychological and physical.

ED can stem from a temporary issue, like stress, communication problems with your partner, or too much alcohol. Or it could be a medical issue like an injury, hormonal imbalance, diabetes, heart disease, nerve disorders, medication side effects, or high blood pressure.

Myth: My ED means that now I have to take the little blue pill.

Fact: Oral medications can be a great option for treating ED, but it’s not for everyone, and it’s not for every reason.

In addition to Viagra®, Levitra®, and Cialis®, we offer several other approaches to your ED, depending on what’s causing your symptoms.

You might be surprised to learn that simple changes in your everyday routine can make a difference in your sexual function. Many men who lose weight, stop smoking and cut back on alcohol notice a big improvement in their sexual performance, endurance, and satisfaction.

If you need a little more help than that, you might be a good candidate for the eWave®, an amazing technology that delivers gentle waves of energy to your penis to stimulate tissue regeneration and increase new vascularization. All it takes is less than half an hour a week for six weeks.

Other potential therapies include:

Myth: My ED will go away on its own, so there’s no need to see a doctor.

Fact: In many cases, this may be true — ED can resolve itself if it’s caused by things you can easily address on your own, like weight loss, smoking and drinking, and stress.

But ED may also be a symptom of a more serious condition like:

The best way to get to the bottom of it is to come in and see us so we can put your mind at ease and get you on the right treatment path.

Although it’s very personal, remember that your ED affects those around you, too. Obviously your partner would benefit from you resolving your erection issues, but the anxiety, stress, and depression that often go hand-in-hand with ED may impact your work, your friendships, and your confidence.

There’s no need to let erectile dysfunction steal your self-confidence and joy of sex. You can get them back by contacting Urology Associates of Mobile for a consultation with a professional who understands and has answers.
