Robotic Surgery

Procedures like nephrectomy and prostatectomy once required long hospital stays and difficult recoveries. Urology Associates was among the first urology practices to implement a better solution: robotic surgery using the da Vinci® system. The skilled urologists have extensive experience with this cutting-edge system, and perform hundreds of robotic surgeries every year, with reliably excellent results.

What is Robotic Surgery?

Robotic surgery is any procedure that the Urology Associates surgeons perform using the da Vinci surgical system. It’s the most advanced approach to minimally invasive surgery that exists today.

Urology Associates was among the first practices to embrace this cutting-edge technology, and our surgeons perform more robotic procedures than any other urology practices in the Gulf Coast and surrounding areas.

Through a tiny incision, a thin camera scope sends real-time images of the surgical area to a high-definition monitor at a nearby console. Additional tiny incisions are entry ports for miniature surgical tools, securely held by robotic arms. Your surgeon watches the console and controls the robotic arms to conduct all movements during the procedure.

What Procedures Do You Perform Using Robotic Surgery?

We perform two procedures using da Vinci technology, robotic prostatectomy and robotic nephrectomy.

  • Robotic Prostatectomy: In a robotic prostatectomy, your surgeon removes your prostate gland as well as any diseased tissue around it. The older version of this surgery, open prostatectomy, required a long incision; with robotic prostatectomy, your surgeon creates a small group of tiny incisions instead.

  • Robotic Nephrectomy: In a robotic nephrectomy, your surgeon removes either part of your kidney or your whole kidney, along with diseased nearby tissue. Just as with a prostatectomy, an open nephrectomy is invasive surgery requiring a big incision. But with the robotic approach, you only need a few little incisions.

If you have a disease requiring prostate or kidney removal, getting the best results while minimizing pain, scarring, and recovery time is important.

What are the Benefits of Robotic Surgery?

Robotic surgery offers significant advantages compared with open surgery, including:

  • Reduced tissue damage

  • Reduced infection risk after surgery

  • Less blood loss

  • Less pain

  • Fewer internal scars

  • Shorter hospital stay

Most patients who undergo robotic prostatectomy or robotic nephrectomy enjoy a significantly shortened recovery compared with those who had traditional procedures.

When you’re dealing with prostate cancer, kidney cancer, or another invasive disease, robotic surgery is the least-invasive approach with the best results.
