Advanced Bladder and Bowel Control with Dr. Paul H. Moore

Living with bladder or bowel control problems can affect nearly every part of your day. When medications, lifestyle changes, or other conservative treatments aren’t providing enough relief, InterStim™ Sacral Neuromodulation Therapy may offer another option.

At Urology Associates, Paul H. Moore III, MD, FPMRS provides specialized care for patients experiencing overactive bladder, urinary incontinence, urinary retention, and fecal incontinence. Through our InterStim™ Sacral Neuromodulation Therapy Center of Excellence, patients have access to advanced treatment designed to improve bladder and bowel control and help them get back to everyday life with greater confidence.

What Is InterStim™ Sacral Neuromodulation Therapy?

InterStim™ is an advanced sacral neuromodulation (SNM) therapy that uses gentle electrical stimulation to help regulate the sacral nerves involved in bladder and bowel function.

These nerves help the brain communicate with the bladder and bowel. When those signals aren’t working properly, patients may experience symptoms such as frequent or urgent urination, urinary leakage, difficulty emptying the bladder, or accidental bowel leakage. InterStim™ therapy works by modulating nerve activity to help improve this communication and provide better symptom control.

Unlike medications that address symptoms through the bloodstream, sacral neuromodulation works directly with the nerves involved in bladder and bowel function.

What Conditions Can InterStim™ Treat?

InterStim™ Sacral Neuromodulation Therapy may be an option for patients with:

  • Overactive bladder (OAB)
  • Urinary urgency and frequency
  • Urge urinary incontinence
  • Non-obstructive urinary retention
  • Chronic fecal incontinence or accidental bowel leakage

InterStim™ is generally considered for patients whose symptoms have not improved enough with more conservative treatments or who have been unable to tolerate those treatments.

Try InterStim™ Before Committing to Long-Term Therapy

One of the benefits of sacral neuromodulation is the ability to evaluate the therapy before receiving a long-term implant.

During the evaluation period, a temporary system delivers mild stimulation to the sacral nerves while you track changes in your bladder or bowel symptoms. Dr. Moore can then review your response to determine whether InterStim™ therapy is an appropriate long-term treatment option for you.

Patients who experience meaningful improvement during this trial period may choose to move forward with placement of the InterStim™ neurostimulator.
