Robotic Prostatectomy Explained
A prostatectomy is procedure in which the prostate and surrounding affected tissue is removed. Traditionally, this was completed as an open procedure. With the invention of the da Vinci robotic technology, urologists are now opting to perform robotic prostatectomies over the traditional open prostatectomy. This allows the surgeon to perform the surgery through a number of smaller incisions reducing the amount tissue damage the surgery causes.
Benefits of Robotic over Open Prostatectomy
Benefits of a robotic prostatectomy over a traditional prostatectomy include:
- Less pain
- Less fever complications
- Shorter hospital stays
- Faster recovery
- Earlier return of urinary control
- Improved sexual function
- Less internal scaring
